Sexual and Reproductive Health for Health Visitors e-learning programme now available

A new elearning programme designed to raise awareness of health visitors’ important role in promoting sexual and reproductive health at every contact with pregnant women, partners and parents is now available on Health Education England’s elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) Hub.

The Sexual and Reproductive Health for Health Visitors programme has been created by The Institute of Health Visiting and includes 4 sections to support health visitors with promoting sexual and reproductive health to all families they work with, focusing on:

  • what is sexual and reproductive health and why is it important?
  • meaningful conversations
  • sexual and reproductive health within health visiting practice

The sessions, which are funded by the Public Health England Reproductive Health, Sexual Health and HIV Innovation Fund, each take approximately 15 to 20 minutes to complete and learners will enhance their skills in several areas including:

  • understanding the ability to recognise the need to promote sexual and reproductive health
  • appreciating the inequalities associated with specific populations/diverse groups
  • understanding a framework to support sexual, reproductive and preconception health conversations

Promoting Careers in the Allied Health Professions e-learning programme now live

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) has worked in partnership with the Office for Students, College of Podiatry, British Association of Prosthetists and Orthotists, Society of Radiographers and British and Irish Orthoptics Society to develop three elearning sessions to support AHPs undertaking voluntary outreach work with young people and career changers, in schools or other settings.

The sessions, which should be completed in numerical order, teach learners about the context for outreach work and its importance, developing content that is relevant to different audiences, and delivering compelling content that will help to inspire the next generation of AHPs.

The resources capture the expertise in AHP outreach developed by the professional outreach team employed under the ‘Strategic Interventions in Health Education Disciplines’ project, funded by the Office for Students (2018-21), and link closely with the ‘I See The Difference’ campaign and website.

Learning outcomes from the sessions may be submitted to the Health and Care Professions Council as part of a CPD audit.

COVID-19 e-learning programme: 1 Year review

18 March 2021 marks 1 year since the HEE elfh Coronavirus elearning programme went live.

12 months on, and the wealth of COVID-19 resources available on the programme, including the vaccination elearning, continues to be a valuable resource for the health and care workforce and over 4.6 million sessions have now been launched.

The content remains free to access by people working in the NHS, the healthcare sector, the independent sector and social care and can be accessed on the HEE elfh Coronavirus elearning programme page.

We have created a COVID-19 update webpage for October 2020 onwards. It will provide guidance and information from HEE, which applies to all students and trainees. This webpage also includes HEE COVID-19 Surge Guidance.

 

The Learning Hub – Long COVID educational resources – call for content 

The Learning Hub is a digital platform that provides easy access to a wide range of education and training resources for the health and care workforce.

Colleagues across health and care have been contributing resources and there are now over 950 resources available to access and share with colleagues.  These resources include videos and webinar recordings, elearning, slide presentations, Q&A packs, simulation scripts, posters, lesson plans and web links.

Contributions to the Learning Hub offer and support a wide range of training subject areas, including resources to support and deliver the current pandemic response and recovery, virtual training delivery and to support re-deployment.  As efforts shift towards pandemic recovery, the TEL team would like to encourage the sharing of educational resources particularly to increase knowledge in managing long-term effects of Coronavirus (long COVID) in patients.

It only takes a few minutes to contribute a resource to the Learning Hub, so if you or your organisation has resources to share and contribute to the Learning Hub please visit: https://learninghub.nhs.uk and select “Contribute a resource”.  You can sign into the Learning Hub either using an elearning for healthcare username and password or by creating an account on the Learning Hub and using those details.

Applications to the National School of Healthcare Science Scientist Training Programme (STP) increased by 15 per cent from last year. ARCP webinar

A webinar on ARCPs is being held for doctors in training on Tuesday 23 March at 19:00. The webinar will provide an update on ARCP guidance and processes, training recovery and live Q&As.

The webinar will be led by Dr Phil Bright – Head of School Medicine, Prof. Adrian Brooke – Deputy Medical Director and Professor Jane Mamelok – North West Regional Postgraduate Dean.

Foundation ARCP webinar

In addition to the webinar on Tuesday 23 March, a second webinar is being held for doctors in training on Thursday 25 March at 19.00, focusing in particular on Foundation ARCP guidance, processes and live Q&As.

The webinar will be led by Dr Mike Masding, Co-Chair UKFPO, Dr Fiona Cameron and Dr Clare van Hamel, who are both Foundation School Directors.

Interim Foundation Pharmacist Programme update

Provisionally registered pharmacists who took the delayed registration assessment on 17 and 18 March will get their result on 29 April. Now that the March assessment dates are over, the focus of the programme will shift to re-engaging with foundation practice, while continuing to support those who have opted to sit the Summer assessment. Find out more about the Summer and Autumn assessment dates on the General Pharmaceutical Council website.

Registration for the Interim Foundation Pharmacist Programme closes on 10 May. We encourage all provisionally registered pharmacists to sign up for the programme to benefit from all the support available. Find out more on the IFPP website.

We are ensuring core HEE work to support our NHS colleagues continues:

2020 National Education and Training Survey Results

The results for the recent HEE NETS are out now. NETS is aimed at all healthcare trainees and students across all clinical learning environments. The final number of responses received was 36,686, which is a 20% increase on the 2019 survey.

The interactive NETS Reporting Tool is now available on our website alongside a suite of regional and professional reports. These aim to provide an overview of the survey response data and offer a high-level analysis from the perspective of an NHS Region or professional group. The NETS Reporting Tool provides a granular level of information and includes a series of filterable options to enable the user to view relevant response data and create bespoke reports.

Together, the tool and reports illustrate the experience of students and trainees and offer a valuable insight into the wellbeing of learners during the pandemic.  This information can be triangulated with existing quality indicators, data sources and clinical and professional insights and intelligence to form a comprehensive picture of the clinical learning environment.

Joint plan for inclusive pharmacy practice

A joint plan for inclusive pharmacy was published last week. We are working collaboratively with NHS England and NHS Improvement, the Royal Pharmaceutical Society and Association of Pharmacy Technicians UK to develop and embed inclusive pharmacy professional practice into everyday care for patients and members of the public, to support the prevention of ill-health and address health inequalities within our diverse communities. Applications for Cohort 4 of the NHS Digital Academy’s Digital Health Leadership Programme to open on 1st April

We are pleased to announce that the application window for Cohort 4 of the Digital Health Leadership Programme (NHS Digital Academy) will open on 1st April 2021, closing on Friday 30th April, with the Cohort starting in September 2021.

You will find the latest updates on the NHS Digital Academy website, including support throughout the application process, top tips, case studies and access to webinars, and by following the Digital Readiness Twitter account. The website also includes our future vision for increasing access to a greater number of individuals.

Establishing the NHS Digital Academy is a workstream within the HEE Digital Readiness Programme. This programme is commissioned by NHSX.

HEE Star: proven to workforce redesign

The HEE Star is a definitive tool for any workforce redesign programme and Health Education England (HEE) has spent three years researching, building and refining the Star methodology and a set of accompanying resources to become the highly effective solution it has become today.

HEE commissioned health economists, Economics By Design, to qualify and quantify the value to providers and systems of applying the HEE Star methodology to planning workforce redesign. Evidence drawn from multiple examples of use illustrate greater results in a shorter time period – saving time for senior leaders and clinicians, as well as generating the potential for faster and more wide-spread change, given the efficiency and breadth of the design process.

Updates to End of Life Care (e-ELCA)

A new session on the AMBER care bundle has been added to the End of Life Care for All (e-ELCA) elearning programme.

This new session describes what the care bundle is, why it was developed and how to use it in clinical practice. It also explains how the resource will help colleagues to provide high quality care for patients who are facing uncertain recovery and may be approaching the end of life.

All Our Health launches interactive townscape on childhood obesity

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) has worked in partnership with Public Health England (PHE) to develop an interactive townscape on childhood obesity as part of the All Our Health elearning programme.

The townscape provides advice and guidance for health and care professionals to help support families and children living above a healthy weight. The COVID-19 pandemic has posed challenges for families, including the closure of schools, leisure centres and sports clubs, which has contributed towards a decrease in physical activity for some children.

The interactive townscape takes a place-based approach to consider what action can be taken on this public health issue and features an animated town where learners can select various buildings, such as the school and sports centre, to access advice and guidance for preventing illness, protecting health and promoting wellbeing.

The townscape also signposts learners to other sources of support such as PHE and obesity charities.

It complements All Our Health’s 25 bite-sized elearning sessions which cover a range of public health topics including mental health, early adolescence, immunisation and physical activity.

Cleaning for confidence - keeping NHS premises safe and clean for patients

This elearning programme was developed in partnership with Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) and NHS England and NHS Improvement (Midlands).

The programme outlines the fundamentals of cleaning and infection prevention and control to everyone within the NHS family, with the aim of stopping the spread of Coronavirus and other infections. The public-facing element of the campaign also aims to give confidence to patients and service users that NHS services remain safe to access during the pandemic and beyond.

Why is cleaning for confidence important?

  • Keeping NHS premises safe and clean for our patients is a commitment that we all share, and it is something that has never been more important than right now.
  • Every single person within the NHS family has a part to play in maintaining that commitment to keeping people safe.
  • A clean workplace is our first and best defence in stopping the spread of COVID-19 and other infections.

About the Cleaning for Confidence programme

The Cleaning for Confidence elearning programme was developed to build upon staff knowledge of the good cleaning practices, that can help to stop the spread of COVID-19 and other infections where they work, both in clinical and non-clinical settings.

The elearning session takes approximately 20 minutes to complete and a certificate can be generated on completion of the elearning.

Everyone who completes the Cleaning for Confidence programme will become a cleaning champion, having demonstrated their commitment to keeping colleagues, patients and their families safe each and every day.

Urgent care for paramedics – Illness

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) worked with the College of Paramedics to produce 10 modules on urgent care for paramedics – illness.

During the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond, paramedics and others may find the modules useful when providing urgent care in a range of different settings. The sessions may be useful for experienced paramedics, students or assistant practitioners, and healthcare professionals working in primary, urgent and unscheduled care.

The urgent care for paramedics – illness modules include:

  • acute red eye
  • adult rashes
  • back pain
  • cellulitis
  • community acquired pneumonia
  • constipation
  • dizziness
  • headaches
  • sore throat
  • urinary tract infection

Within each module, interactive sessions can be accessed on a variety of mobile devices and last approximately 20 minutes.

New radiotherapy module added to e-IRMER

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) has worked in partnership with the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine to add a new radiotherapy module to the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations (IR(ME)R) elearning programme.
The e-IRMER programme is a free training resource aimed at non-specialist staff working in radiotherapy. It may also provide a useful introductory/refresher resource for trainees and some staff working in the radiotherapy department.
The programme comprises the following topics:

  • Interpretation of the regulations
  • The basic physics associated with ionising radiations
  • The risks associated with ionising radiations
  • The radio-biological effects of exposure to ionising radiations
  • The production of X-rays
  •  The application of ionising radiations for diagnostic X-ray imaging
  • The application of ionising radiations in nuclear medicine
  • The application of ionising radiations for radiotherapy
  • Practical examples of the roles of duty holders
  • Practical examples of how to reduce patients’ exposures to ionising radiations

The new radiotherapy session, which takes approximately 30 minutes to complete, describes the principles of IR(ME)R in application to imaging and therapeutic exposures in radiotherapy. The session includes the following topics:

  • Patient pathway
  • Duty holders
  • Referral
  • Pregnancy and identification enquiries
  • Justification
  • Authorisation
  • Optimisation
  • Dose assessment, assurance and evaluation
  • Accidental and unintended exposures
  • Equipment and quality assurance
  • Carers and comforters
  • Brachytherapy/molecular radiotherapy and Administration of Radioactive Substances Advisory Committee (ARSAC) licenses
  • Medical physics experts

e-Learning for Healthcare – What’s next?

HEE’s TEL team provides a range of services that enable the application of learning technologies and simulation-based education within HEE and across the health and care workforce to support education and training to improve patient care.

The TEL team’s services include managing three digital platforms that provide learning opportunities for the health and care workforce. The largest of these platforms is the elearning for healthcare (elfh) Hub.

In 2020, the elfh Hub saw 22 million session launches and it has seen over 50 million session launches since elfh began. The number of people accessing elfh content is increasing every day and the TEL team is keen to ensure stability for learners in the future.

In May 2020, the TEL team launched the Learning Hub; a new digital platform that provides easy access to a wide range of education and training resources for the health and care workforce. Organisations and users can contribute and share resources for those in health and care to access.

As part of the further development of the Learning Hub, existing elfh content will be migrated to the Learning Hub.  As well as the learning content being migrated, users’ accounts will also be transferred to ensure learning records are preserved to provide continuity for learners and employers.  It is important to highlight that all the existing functionality that users experience on the elfh Hub will be retained and, in fact, accessing elfh content via the Learning Hub will provide additional features and functionality for learners. The migration of elfh content to the Learning Hub supports the ways of working and the future direction of the TEL team’s work; keeping platforms up to date using the latest technology and providing easy access to many other resources and resource types to further support education and training for the health and care workforce.

The elfh design and development service will continue to operate as it currently does, working with subject matter experts, clinical leads and stakeholders to develop high quality digital learning content to meet the needs of our health and care learners.
