Posted on: May 29th, 2018 by Alex Drinkall No Comments

Members of the team that work on the Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE e-LFH) elearning Programme for Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (e-LPRAS) recently supported the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS) with its Advanced Educational Course on ‘Limb Reconstruction’.

The event, which took place at the Manchester Conference Centre last month, was very well attended and included a mix of both practical demonstrations and traditional lectures.

Delegates were invited to complete a selection of e-LPRAS sessions as pre-course and/or post-course reading. Session topics included ‘Chronic Osteomyelitis in the Lower Limb’, ‘Acute Compartment Syndrome in the Lower Limb’ and ‘Management of Bone Loss in Open Fractures of the Lower Limb’.

e-LPRAS Stand (002)Team members also manned a dedicated e-LPRAS stand in the exhibitors’ area, allowing them to gather feedback, register new users and spread the word about new developments on the project.

Stephen Gibbons, elfh Project Manager said, “As the e-LPRAS project grows, face-to-face events such as these remain vital. They provide an important opportunity for team members to connect with our users and for the project to demonstrate its commitment to the educational role of BAPRAS. Thanks to Kavita Prashar and the rest of the BAPRAS team for helping to make it happen.”

Further BAPRAS Advanced Educational Courses on topics such as ‘Cleft, Craniofacial and Ear Reconstruction’ and ‘Skin Oncology’ are planned for later this year and for early 2019.

New learning package designed to help clinicians spot the early sign of sepsis in children and infants

Posted on: May 14th, 2018 by Alex Drinkall No Comments

A new learning package aimed at improving the rates of accurate diagnosis and treatment of sepsis in children has been launched by Health Education England (HEE).

The ‘Think Sepsis’ programme to identify and manage sepsis in paediatrics is a new type of training for clinicians which can be used in face to face sessions or independently through elearning.

The learning package is case-based and comprises of interviews with the parents of three children affected by sepsis – Melissa Mead, whose son William died, Jason Watkins and Clara Francis, whose daughter Maude died, and Katie Maryon-Wilson, whose daughter Rosie survived.

The films follow the patient journey from diagnosis to treatment, as the parents each talk about their experience of sepsis, their child’s treatment and diagnosis of the condition and the impact that it has had on their families.

Clinical experts also feature in the training to offer guidance in spotting the difficult to spot signs of sepsis in children and the best practice response to effectively treat this life-threatening condition.

The videos are complemented with teaching notes and a training guide that can enhance learning and contribute to CPD.

The training is hosted on HEE’s elearning for healthcare platform and is free to access for all staff in NHS and social care. It has a new enhanced feature, in that it can be used as an elearning package, whilst also being suitable to be delivered in a classroom setting by trainers and facilitators. It is being promoted widely around our local offices and training hubs.

The new materials were showcased at the House of Commons where MP Caroline Dinenage, Minister of State for Care, welcomed the elearning package as a revolutionary approach to tackling sepsis diagnosis and treatment.

The Minister of State for Care said: “Education and training is the golden thread in improving recognition, treatment and positive outcomes of sepsis in children. We are working with Health Education England to make sure all health professionals have the knowledge and skills to identify and treat sepsis.

With hospital care quality and patient safety as a responsibility, I’m very pleased to celebrate this new approach in training and education in paediatric sepsis”.

Following several high-profile cases of child deaths due to sepsis, the Secretary of State recognised the need for the NHS to radically improve the diagnosis and care for patients suffering from the condition.

It’s estimated that there are around 123,000 cases of sepsis each year in England, with around 1,000 of these cases reported in children under five, which the eLearning package aims to reduce by supporting health and social care professionals through training and personal development.

Wendy Reid, Director of Education and Quality and National Medical Director for Health Education England said: “The new ‘Think Sepsis’ materials show just how important HEE’s role is in education and how it can lead to saving patients’ lives. Sepsis is a hugely important topic in both children and adults and this new educational resource, which is available to all health and social care professionals, can help improve diagnoses and treatment rates for patients”.

HEE has worked collaboratively across the healthcare system through the HEE Sepsis working group with several Royal Colleges, the UK Sepsis Trust charity, Public Health England and patient representatives to produce the learning materials.

The ‘Think Sepsis’ elearning package is free and available to all NHS healthcare professionals through HEE’s elearning for healthcare website.

Immunisation e-learning programme now live

Posted on: April 6th, 2018 by Alex Drinkall No Comments

Immunisation is a highly successful public health intervention, saving thousands of lives every year. To ensure ongoing public confidence in vaccines and a high vaccine uptake, it is vital that all those who advise on and/or administer immunisations are confident, knowledgeable and up to date.

This elearning programme has been designed in line with the recommendations made in the Public Health England (PHE) National Minimum Standards and Core Curriculum for Immunisation Training.

In recognition of the fact that immunisations are given in many different settings and service areas, this programme has been designed to be relevant to all healthcare practitioners with a role in immunisation.

It consists of seven knowledge sessions with accompanying assessments. It is recommended that those new to immunisation complete all seven sessions. Those with prior knowledge and experience in immunisation may wish to read through the relevant knowledge sessions for refresher training or undertake the assessment sessions to check on their knowledge.

The sessions cover:

  • National immunisation policy and programmes
  • Immunology
  • Vaccine preventable diseases
  • Communicating with patients and parents
  • Legal aspects
  • Vaccine storage
  • Vaccine administration

For more information about the elearning programme and for details of how to access the programme visit: https://www.e-lfh.org.uk/programmes/immunisation/

Introducing Learning Paths on eFetal Monitoring

Posted on: April 3rd, 2018 by Alex Drinkall No Comments

A new learning path structure for eFetal Monitoring (eFM) is now available.
The knowledge sessions and assessments now appear as a series of learning paths based upon levels of complexity. The four learning paths are:

  • Level 1 – Pathophysiology: Normal Fetal Heart Rate Pattern
  • Level 2 – Risk factors for Fetal Hypoxia
  • Level 3 – Pathophysiology: Complex Fetal Heart Rate Pattern
  • Level 4 – Complex Pregnancies

All previous knowledge sessions are still available and all user records are still accessible. However users will need to work through the assessments in order and pass at 80% or higher for the proceeding levels’ assessment to be unlocked.

Each learning path consists of two courses; one for knowledge sessions and one for assessment. This means users have the opportunity to generate two certificates for each learning path. Certification is available upon course completion, or passing the assessment section, and can be generated via the certificate icon at learning path level. The previous method of generating certificates, via My Activity, is no longer available.
