Mental Capacity Act e-learning programme launched

Posted on: August 15th, 2019 by Alex Drinkall No Comments

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) has worked with organisation including the Office of the Public Guardian, Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, Department of Health and Social Care, Care Quality Commission and Ministry of Justice to develop an elearning programme for health and care professionals about the Mental Capacity Act.

The Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA) provides a statutory framework for people who lack capacity to make decisions for themselves, or who have capacity and want to prepare for a time when they may lack capacity in the future. When a person lacks capacity, for example to consent to or refuse treatment, the MCA lays out who can make decisions in the person’s best interests, and how such decisions must be made.

Mental capacity is the ability to make a specific decision at the time it needs to be made, with help if necessary. It has been estimated that over two million adults and young people may lack mental capacity at any time (due to dementia, acquired brain injuries, learning disabilities, acute delirium and other conditions).

The MCA lays out how an individual can retain power over decisions that have to be made in the future, if they should lose capacity. Whether or not a person has taken such steps, it is by following the MCA that professionals ensure they are acting lawfully and respecting the human rights of people who may lack capacity to consent to interventions that are proposed.

The HEE elfh Mental Capacity Act elearning programme comprises 11 elearning sessions, which cover the following titles:

  • Mental Capacity Act as Part of Human Rights
  • Assessing Mental Capacity
  • Planning Ahead using the Mental Capacity Act
  • Best Interests
  • Restraint
  • Deprivation of Liberty
  • Relationship between the Mental Capacity Act and the Mental Health Act
  • Mental Capacity Act and Young People aged 16 or 17
  • Research involving People who Lack Capacity
  • Mental Capacity Act and Adult Safeguarding
  • Settling Disputes and Disagreements.

Each elearning session will take approximately 20 to 30 minutes to complete and is made up of factual knowledge, case scenarios, short interviews and self-assessment questions to test your knowledge.

The MCA programme is available to access on the HEE elfh Hub, the Electronic Staff Record (ESR) and via AICC.

New Eye-Site e-learning session

Posted on: August 1st, 2019 by Alex Drinkall No Comments

Health Education England elearning for healthcare has worked with The Royal College of Ophthalmologists to develop two new sessions that have been added to the Eye-Site elearning programme.

Eye-Site 13 – Advanced Phacoemulsification

This elearning course is aimed at those surgeons who have completed the intermediate course and are at the stage of taking on more complex cataract challenges. This includes looking at the phacodynamics of modern phaco machines and how that has improved over recent years and how this can be applied to more complex cases. The rest of the module relates to complications management for various stages of the operation and how intra-operative decisions can make a big difference to outcomes. Intraocular lenses (IOL) exchange is also discussed regarding its relationship with the indications for exchange and problems arising from modern IOL design.

Eye-Site 17 – Retinopathy of Prematurity

This course is a competency and revision package for all regular and occasional Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) screeners. It covers four main topics in ROP:

1) Pathogenesis and risk factors for ROP

2) Screening criteria and how to screen for ROP

3) How to grade ROP and when to refer

4) Treatment strategies for ROP.

Within the course there is a link to the interactive American Academy of Ophthalmology ROP case-based training website.

Introduction to Population Screening now live

Posted on: July 25th, 2019 by Alex Drinkall No Comments

The new Introduction to Population Screening elearning programme, developed by Public Health England and Health Education England elearning for healthcare, provides healthcare professionals with a guide to screening.

The elearning includes common misconceptions and explanations of important terms such as sensitivity and specificity and will be of particular interest to those working in local screening services or public health.

The module covers:

  • what population screening is and the generic screening pathway common to all programmes
  • the national screening programmes in England and their target populations and conditions
  • the limitations of screening and the difference to diagnosis
  • the screening cycle, from evidence to implementation and quality assurance
  • the different organisations involved with screening programmes in England, including Public Health England, NHS England and the UK National Screening Committee

Public Health England provides advice and guidance to the NHS. The national population screening programmes identify apparently healthy people who may be at increased risk of a disease or condition, enabling earlier treatment and informed decisions.

The elearning resource is available now on the elfh Hub. For more information about the programme visit: https://www.e-lfh.org.uk/programmes/nhs-screening-programmes/

Blended learning for safeguarding adults levels 3 and 4

Posted on: July 23rd, 2019 by Alex Drinkall No Comments

Earlier this year, Health Education England (HEE) brought together over 50 safeguarding professionals to co-produce learning designs for levels 3 and 4 safeguarding adults training. The training is set out in the ‘Safeguarding for Adults: Roles and Competencies’, the new national Intercollegiate Document, which defines the safeguarding knowledge, skills and attitudes required by staff working in all health and care settings.

Work is now underway to produce national resources for levels 3 and 4 safeguarding adults training. These will be launched in January 2020.

Level 3 will comprise a Massive Online Open Course (MOOC) – including online discussion, short video clips, links to reading material and online simulation using 360° immersive video. The MOOC will be accompanied by a workshop toolkit comprising a guide to run face to face sessions, video clips and more.

The solution for level 4 will be a set of tools that staff can use to aid the discovery of relevant resources based on their current knowledge and skills, log their work-based learning and have access to a programme of live webinars on ‘hot topics’ across the country.

For more information about this project or if you wish to be involved in the content review phases for either levels 3 or 4 contact alison.potter@hee.nhs.uk.

Further information is also available via the Safeguarding Adults National Network (SANN) virtual network and by following @alisongpotter on Twitter.

New Musculoskeletal Primary Care e-learning programme

Posted on: July 19th, 2019 by Alex Drinkall No Comments

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) has developed the musculoskeletal (MSK) primary care elearning programme to support clinicians working in primary care as first contact practitioners (FCP).

The programme is as a resource to support clinical competency assessment and sign off through a clinical training programme. The programme provides eight modules that take the learner through a range of primary care issues that are commonly seen as part of a MSK FCP assessment.

The modules have been designed to complement the MSK core capabilities framework that outlines the expected clinical capabilities that a competent clinician should be able to demonstrate when working in this field of clinical practice. All the modules have been produced with a person-centred approach (PCA) and it is recommended that clinicians complete the PCA elearning modules that are also available on the elfh Hub.

The MSK elearning programme consists of eight modules:

  • Module 1 – What is primary care
  • Module 2 – Identification of the ill and risk.
  • Module 3 – Mental health
  • Module 4 – Complex decision making
  • Module 5 – Public health
  • Module 6 – Persistent pain
  • Module 7 – Pharmacology
  • Module 8 – Serious pathology

Each module includes self-assessment and a certificate of completion.

The MSK elearning programme is available on the elfh Hub, the Electronic Staff Record (ESR) and via AICC.

New Genomics 101 courses launched

Posted on: July 12th, 2019 by Alex Drinkall No Comments

With genomics moving into the mainstream through the new NHS Genomic Medicine Service, it has never been more vital that health professionals gain an understanding of genomics and its applications in healthcare.

To meet this need, the Genomics Education Programme (GEP) has launched the first in a new series of introductory courses that aim to give health professionals an overview of the fundamentals of genomics and its impact on patient care. Created for those with little or no previous knowledge of genomics, each of the courses will focus on a key aspect of genomics, from the underlying science to the clinical practice.

Lasting no more than 30-40 minutes each, learners will develop their understanding of genomics through written content, infographics, film, animation and interactive elements, and can test their knowledge with a final quiz.

All our 101 courses are available through the Health Education England elearning for healthcare (elfh) Hub and are free to access for NHS staff and universities in the UK. At the end of each session, there is an opportunity to demonstrate what has been learnt through a short quiz and a certificate of participation.
