Midwifery Identification, Stabilisation and Transfer of the Sick Newborn (MIST)

Posted on: November 5th, 2019 by Alex Drinkall No Comments

Health Education England’s elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) has worked with The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust and The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to develop an elearning programme to support maternity and emergency teams treating unexpectedly unwell babies in community settings.

The Midwifery Identification, Stabilisation and Transfer of the Sick Newborn (MIST) programme is aimed at midwifery and ambulance colleagues to support the treatment plan for newborn babies who are, or have the potential to become, unwell following delivery in a community setting. The resources are designed to equip maternity and emergency teams with the knowledge required to extend care beyond the first minutes after birth, up to and including handover to the neonatal team.

The programme consists of four elearning sessions and covers several clinical scenarios from normal health to significant illness. It is expected that by completing all four sessions within this programme, healthcare professionals will be able to:

  • Recognise normal and abnormal infant colour (anaemia and cyanosis)
  • Recognise normal and abnormal feeding patterns and abdominal signs
  • Support an infant born unexpectedly preterm
  • Support a baby born in an unexpectedly poor condition.

Each session will cover identification, management including stabilisation and communication, and transfer to a neonatal unit.

e-Learning to help people living in cold homes

Posted on: November 5th, 2019 by Alex Drinkall No Comments

Around three million people in England live in homes that are too cold. The health effects are enormous – people can end up visiting their GP more, being admitted to hospital, becoming depressed, or even dying because they are just not warm enough at home.

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) has worked with Public Health England (PHE) to develop the Helping People Living in Cold Homes elearning programme for health and care professionals.

The elearning resource supports health and social care professionals to put National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidance into practice.

Aimed at health and care staff who undertake home visits, the resource provides information on local services that can assist people living in cold homes, such as installing insulation, improving heating systems or helping reduce energy bills.

It also helps people spot the signs of a cold home – including less obvious ones.

With this information, staff can have a conversation with people whose health may be affected by being too cold at home, and signpost them to the relevant local services.

For more information about the elearning programme, including details on how to access, visit: https://www.e-lfh.org.uk/programmes/cold-homes/.

Career Planning for Foundation doctors

Posted on: November 1st, 2019 by Alex Drinkall No Comments

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) has recently revised and updated its popular elearning course to help Foundation doctors make informed career choices and effective applications for future career steps. The revision has been in response to user feedback and incorporates new values and skills exercises as well as a comprehensive case study following a Foundation doctor’s career planning journey.

This course was the first in a number of bespoke career planning courses developed for healthcare professionals within the HEE elfh career planning programme and has been widely used by Foundation trainees. If you are a doctor who has completed the previous version of this course, there is no need to complete the revised version as the content is very similar.

The course provides Foundation doctors with a deeper level of understanding of how to ensure future career planning is informed, realistic and robust. It is based around the following five sessions:

Introduction which provides an overview to the course:

  • Self-awareness which includes reflecting on values, work preferences, skills interests, personality and career stressors
  • Career exploration which includes consideration and research of career options available as well as developing effective networks
  • Arriving at your decision which focuses on decision making types and methods as well as how to check the robustness of career decisions
  • Next Steps which offers advice, information and examples on CV development, job applications and preparing for interviews as well as effective action planning

For each session, learners have the opportunity to compile a distinctive, thorough personal portfolio of research, exercises and reflections contained in downloadable workbooks. The learning gained from both undertaking the sessions and completing workbook exercises can be particularly useful in supporting job applications and interviews.

Other courses available through the HEE elfh Career Planning programme include:

  • Career Planning for Core Doctors (Internal Medicine, Surgery, Psychiatry)
  • Career Planning for Pre-Registration/ Foundation pharmacists
  • Supporting Career Conversations for Educators
  • Career Planning for Health Care Scientists (coming soon).
