New healthier weight e-learning for the health and care workforce

The healthier weight competency framework aims to prevent excess weight with early intervention from the health and care workforce. It is grounded in a person-centered approach and aligns with making every contact count.

The framework was designed to provide the health and care workforce with guidance in promoting a healthier weight. This includes frontline staff, managers, commissioners and leaders of teams, services and organisations, in different roles and settings.

The framework can be used by staff working with any community or group within the population, including children, adults, pregnant women, care givers and vulnerable groups.

About the healthier weight competency framework elearning programme

Based on role type, the elearning programme consists of three modules which break down the healthier weight competency framework for:

  • frontline health and care staff – competencies required for engaging with people about a healthier weight in an informed and sensitive way
  • managers – competencies required for facilitating an informed and sensitive system wide approach to a healthier weight
  • commissioners and leaders – competencies required for facilitating an informed and sensitive system wide approach to a healthier weight.

Written by experts in the healthier weight competency framework, activities in three modules follow key principles in the framework: engage, assess and enable, including links to related elfh elearning sessions and additional information.

NBIA Monthly Update – December 2020

New elearning for radiographers, radiologists and breast clinicians available

In May 2020, the National Breast Imaging Academy (NBIA), in partnership with Health Education England elearning for healthcare (elfh), launched their elearning programme for radiographers, radiologists and breast clinicians.  This is the eighth monthly update about the programme.

The full programme of elearning sessions is due to be completed in early 2021 to support your training needs during the COVID-19 pandemic.

What’s new?

There are 87 elearning sessions available on the elfh Hub.  The latest sessions to be added include:

  • Interpreting Digital Breast Tomosynthesis
  • Medicolegal Considerations in Breast Imaging

Additional sessions will be added to the elearning catalogue as soon as they are ready.

What can I expect from the elearning sessions?

The interactive elearning sessions cover a wide range of topics on breast imaging and relevant aspects of surgery, oncology, pathology, nursing, and risk and prevention.

New and refreshed sessions are available for professional development teams

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) worked with the Professional Development Team at HEE London and South East (LaSE) to review existing elearning sessions, aimed at educators and supervisors of doctors, nurses, midwives, dentists, pharmacists, allied health professionals and healthcare scientists.

What can I expect from the elearning sessions?

All 20 sessions have been revised and reflect current policy updates and procedures.  These modules are linked to the Professional Development Framework for Educators.

The refreshed elearning sessions include:

Using simulation in health professions education Workplace and practice

based assessment

Assuring and maintaining quality in health professions education Appraisal

 

Diversity, equal opportunities and human rights Assessing educational needs

 

Involving patients in health professions education Setting learning objectives

 

Facilitating learning in the workplace Supervision

Each elearning session takes from 30 to 60 minutes to complete. A certificate is generated on completing all of the courses within the programme.

More about the Educator Training Resources Programme

Launched in March 2017, the Educator Training Resources is a multi-professional resource, aimed at educators across the healthcare professions. The resource contains content from the Multiprofessional Faculty Development Team and HEE Kent, Surrey and Sussex’s e-training for trainers (etft) modules. Complementary content from other regions is also included.

New Genomics in the NHS programme

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) in partnership with the HEE Genomics Education Programme (GEP) are delighted to launch their new Genomics in the NHS programme; a collection of elearning sessions designed for all healthcare professionals looking to learn more about genomics.

With the launch of the NHS Genomics Medicine Service in England, more healthcare professionals than ever before are likely to encounter genomics in their daily role. As it increasingly becomes part of routine care, all healthcare professionals, not just those within specialist departments, will need some level of understanding of the impact genomics will have on the diagnosis, treatment and management of a wide variety of conditions.

This new programme seeks to meet this educational need in an open, collaborative way, by inviting genomics educators from across the NHS to contribute their educational resources and courses.

About the Genomics in the NHS programme

The Genomics in the NHS programme is a collection of new and refreshed elearning sessions developed by NHS educational teams to support and educate all healthcare professionals about genomic medicine and the benefits it is bringing to patient care.

The programme was developed to incorporate elearning resources from Health Education England’s Genomics Education Programme (GEP) along with other contributors. The programme launches with elearning from the GEP and Liverpool Women’s NHS Foundation Trust.

New and refreshed elearning sessions

The GEP’s content features a range of foundation and specialist courses on a wide range of topics related to genomics. Learners with no or limited exposure to genomics can build up their knowledge with the Genomics 101 collection, comprising nine short introductory courses covering the basic of DNA, genetic inheritance, genetic testing and communicating with patients about genomics.

Meanwhile, healthcare professionals who are already familiar with genomics can access more tailored sessions, designed for those who support patients through genomic testing, including whole genome sequencing.

The Liverpool Women’s NHS Foundation Trust has contributed its first elearning resources to the Genomics in the NHS programme. The sessions have been designed to assist healthcare professionals working with patients with rare diseases, looking to understand and integrate genomics into their clinical practice.

Learners will be provided with an overview of basic, general genomics knowledge, which will then be assessed. They will examine genomic knowledge specific to their area of practice, by identifying common genetic conditions. They will also examine local pathways and support systems for the patients and are encouraged to support their learning and case-based discussions with the help of a local facilitator.

e-Learning sessions support paramedics caring for mother and baby

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) worked with the College of Paramedics to develop ten bite-sized sessions to develop paramedics’ knowledge of childbirth, maternal emergencies and care of newborn babies.

Written and edited by paramedic-midwife, Aimee Yarrington, each session in the maternity and newborn care for paramedics’ module was designed to build confidence and competence in experienced paramedics, students and assistant practitioners when caring for mother and baby in a wide range of scenarios such as normal birth, breech birth, peripartum haemorrhage and newborn life support.

The module covers the following topics:

  • Ante-partum haemorrhage
  • Birth
  • Breech birth
  • Care of the newborn
  • Cord prolapse
  • Maternal resuscitation
  • Newborn life support
  • Post-partum haemorrhage
  • Pregnancy induced hypertension and pre-eclampsia
  • Shoulder dystocia

Each interactive session can be accessed on a variety of mobile devices and lasts approximately 20 minutes.

ESCAPE-pain - supporting people with chronic joint pain

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) with ESCAPE-pain and the Health Innovation Network developed two elearning resources, aimed at helping healthcare professionals and exercise instructors understand the principles behind the ESCAPE-pain programme – facilitating group education and exercise sessions for people living with chronic joint pain and learning how the programme may be implemented in their organisation.

What is the ESCAPE-pain programme?

Designed to increase physical function and improve quality of life, ESCAPE-pain is an evidence-based and cost-effective group rehabilitation programme for people with chronic joint pain.

The ESCAPE-pain programme can be delivered in a variety of locations including outpatient physiotherapy departments, leisure centres and local community settings by healthcare professionals and exercise instructors.

There are two ESCAPE-pain programmes designed to support people living with chronic knee and hip pain, and people living with chronic back pain.

To deliver either of the ESCAPE-pain programmes, professionals are required to attend facilitator training.  The training is open to healthcare professionals and exercise instructors who meet the pre-qualification criteria.

The elearning resources are aimed at:

  1. helping interested providers determine how ESCAPE-pain may fit within their organisation and to begin the process towards implementation.
  2. professionals who plan to deliver the programme and become ESCAPE-pain facilitators.

Each elearning session takes approximately 20-30 minutes to complete, with the aim of improving providers’ understanding of what the programme involves and to prepare for the facilitator training.

The ESCAPE-pain programme was recently awarded the MSK Care Initiative of the Year at the HSJ Value Awards 2020.

“The judges felt this was an excellent initiative which enables self-management for people with hip and knee pain. Clear rationale was given for the initiative with supporting evidence and references, which has led to improvement in patient care. The team demonstrated great overall cost saving benefits to the system in terms of total and social health, and the overall ambition to improve general health, fitness and wellbeing was commendable.”

The elearning was commissioned by the Academic Health Science Network (AHSN) and developed by Health Education England elearning for healthcare, in collaboration with ESCAPE-pain and the Health Innovation Network.

SCRIPT - Supporting safer management of medicines

The SCRIPT elearning programme for nursing staff and student nurses consists of 18 modules in three categories, covering a range of topics relating to medicines safety, including:

  • Principles of medicines management
  • Therapeutic groups
  • Managing the risks

Each module takes approximately 60 minutes to complete. All course materials have been authored by a team of expert healthcare professionals and are regularly reviewed and updated.

e-Learning programme available to support health and care workers in identifying and responding to child sexual exploitation

elearning programme available to Support Health and Care Workers in Identifying and Responding to Child Sexual Exploitation

Healthcare Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) worked in partnership with Brook, the leading young person’s sexual health and wellbeing charity, to update existing elearning resources designed to support educators, health and care professionals and community workers in identifying victims of child sexual exploitation (CSE).

About the elearning programme

The CSE elearning programme aims to build the skills and confidence required by educators, health and care professionals and community workers to identify child victims of exploitation, respond to disclosures and take action if they suspect a young person is at risk.

elearning modules within the programme include:

Module 1: What is CSE?
Module 2: Spotting the signs
Module 3: Safeguarding young people.

On average, each CSE elearning module takes 15 minutes to complete, delivered in interactive formats. You can also test your knowledge at the end of a module and gain access to a resource bank to support you in your work.
