Every year thousands of trainees are recruited to healthcare programmes across a wide-range of clinical specialties via standardised national processes. This interactive elearning programme has been created to support assessors involved in the recruitment process. The resource has been designed to help support those who are new to the recruitment and selection process as well as provide a refresher for experienced assessors on the standards and processes adhered to with the selection and recruitment of doctors and other clinical professions.
Using elearning for healthcare as a platform for learning, the aim of this programme is to provide an educational tool, accessible to all assessors, to help ensure national recruitment is conducted consistently and fairly.
The programme currently provides training for assessors in four clinical specialties:
This programme covers recruitment to CT1 posts in core medical training and ACCS acute medicine. There are between 1500-1600 trainees recruited each year across the United Kingdom.
However, due to the high degree of similarity in recruitment processes, it is also largely applicable for those interviewing for ST3 posts in any of the medical specialties coordinated by the Joint Royal Colleges of Physicians Training Board.
There are five 20 to 30 minute elearning sessions for medicine.
This programme covers recruitment to CT1 posts in Core Surgical Training. There are around 600 vacancies per year across England, Scotland and Wales. The training programme allows surgical trainees to take their first footsteps along the exciting path of a surgical career.
There are three 20 to 30 minute elearning sessions for surgery.
This programme covers recruitment to CT1 posts in Core Psychiatry Training and ST4 posts in:
Psychiatry of Learning Disability/Intellectual Disability
There are around 1000 vacancies per year across all levels in England, Scotland and Wales.

As part of the Modernising Scientific Careers (MSC) programme, the National School of Healthcare Science (the School) was established in October 2011 to support the implementation and delivery of the new healthcare science education and training programmes and to comply with the structures within ‘Liberating the NHS: Developing Healthcare Workforce – Policy 16977 (January 2012)’ acting on behalf of the Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) for England. It also provides some elements of support for the three other UK health departments.
The aim of the new educational programmes is to train staff that will be able to work at the highest level in healthcare, understanding and advising on the most recent advances in technology and innovations in patient care, and to have the flexibility and adaptability to work across patient pathways enabling efficient and high quality care.
The National School of Healthcare Science coordinates the annual recruitment to the Scientist Training Programme (STP) and the Higher Specialist Scientist Training (HSST) Programme.
The national recruitment processes ensure standardised selection of high quality applicants to healthcare science training programmes. This assessor focused elearning provides an overview of the national recruitment processes for the STP national recruitment programme with the focus being on developing good practice around interviewer/assessor behaviour.
There are two 20 to 30 minute elearning sessions for healthcare sciences.
This course, supported by Health Education England, NIMDTA, Wales Deanery and NHS Education for Scotland, consists of a single training and calibration elearning session. This is intended for panel members who will be assessing applicants for Dental Core training (DCT). The elearning session consists of a training video which is supported by guidance on scoring, along with a model answer. There are three further videos which panel members are required to view and score as part of the calibration process. At least one hour should be allowed to complete this elearning session.
