About the Preceptorship programme

A structured period of transition guided by a preceptor – an experienced practitioner – is necessary for any newly qualified health professional starting employment. This elearning programme is designed to develop the knowledge and skills needed to act as a preceptor to guide a newly qualified healthcare professional.

Transitioning from learner to registered professional is a crucial part of the developmental journey of all health and social care professionals. This journey, known as ‘preceptorship’ needs to be supported in a structured, professional and individualised way. Preceptors are a key part of a structured support programme for newly registered professionals entering employment; giving them guidance and confidence in the development of their roles. As part of the National Preceptorship Standards, all preceptors are required to have “undertaken training and education that is distinct from mentorship preparation.”

The Preceptorship elearning programme is designed to accommodate the needs of a busy healthcare professional. It has been created to help preceptors attain the level of training required for the National Preceptorship Standards. The programme uses case studies, videos and workbooks to help preceptors in their role, and to enable them to focus on coaching skills, resilience and reflection.

The course consists of the following elearning sessions:

  1. Introducing Preceptorship
  2. Developing the Understanding to be an Effective Preceptor
  3. Consolidating Your Preceptee’s Previous Experience
  4. The Preceptor-Preceptee Relationship and Communication
  5. Principles and Values of Healthcare
  6. Coping and Resilience
  7. Reflection and Reflective Practice
