Flu immunisation is one of the most effective interventions immunisers can provide to reduce both the risk of death and serious illness from flu, and the pressures on health and social care services during the winter. This Flu Immunisation elearning resource is designed to provide all healthcare practitioners involved in delivering the national flu immunisation programme with the knowledge they need to confidently promote high uptake of flu vaccination and effectively deliver the vaccine programme.

This course consists of three knowledge sessions and three assessment sessions. All those undertaking this elearning should complete the Core Knowledge session and accompanying assessment as this is designed to provide essential knowledge about what flu is and the rationale for, and design of, the annual flu programme. Depending on which session(s) is relevant to your role, you should then complete one or both of the subsequent knowledge and assessment sessions which provide more detailed information about the live and inactivated flu vaccines.

The course describes the national flu programme for England for the 2020/21 flu season. Most of the information in the course is relevant for those involved in the flu programme in the other UK countries. However, those undertaking the programme in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales should be aware that some details, such as the age cohorts of children offered the flu vaccine, ordering and reporting of vaccines given etc. may be different. You should therefore ensure that you refer to your country’s annual flu letters so that you are familiar with the specific details of the flu programme for your country.
