Advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs) are complex treatments requiring new ways of working, knowledge and skills for the many staff groups involved in their delivery to patients, as well as presenting urgent learning needs for the healthcare professionals who care for these patients, and for the professional development teams responsible for delivering education and training.
This series of elearning sessions is designed give the learner a basic understanding of advanced therapies, the steps involved in producing these medicines and how they function in the body. The modules take the learner from the basics of cell and gene therapy and different modalities of treatment, through to a more in-depth look at products currently being delivered through both commissioned treatment and clinical trials. Learners will also be introduced to the unique challenges of bringing these pioneering treatments to patients, as they often present novel logistical and handling requirements.
Across the UK, there are four centres that are working to address the unique and complex challenges of bringing pioneering advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs) to patients. Together the centres aim to develop robust systems for the routine delivery of ATMPs as a standard of care throughout the NHS. Three of these centres make up the Advanced Therapy Treatment Centre (ATTC) network which is coordinated by the Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult and supported by the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund, part of the government’s modern Industrial Strategy. The fund is delivered by UK Research and Innovation. These centres are:
The London Advanced Therapies network is funded by Research England and brings together the London scientific community working in the field of cell and gene-based therapies.
The four centres are working together, along with the Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult, to specifically look at the training requirements for the current workforce and what needs to be put in place to support delivery of these novel treatments. Experience of delivering ATMPs is currently limited to a small number of specialist centres nationwide and there is a need for awareness-raising and knowledge-building across the wider NHS workforce.
