In 2017, the government announced measures in Improving lives – the future of work, Health and Disability aimed at building a society in which “all disabled people and people with long-term health conditions are able to go as far as their talents will take them”. One of these measures include activities to integrate health and work into healthcare professionals’ undergraduate training through the development of resources. This work was commissioned via Public Health England and the University of Kent and was developed in collaboration with the Faculty of Occupational Medicine.
Knowledge of the relationship between work and health, as well as its application in leading effective consultations with patients, is a requirement within medical education (as specified in the General Medical Council (GMC) 2018 Outcomes standards for medical graduates, which sets out what newly qualified doctors must know and be able to do). Medical schools have their own approaches to teaching and exercise autonomy in the delivery of their undergraduate curricula to meet GMC standards.
This new medical undergraduate resource provides adaptable content to support health and work education and can be incorporated flexibly into existing undergraduate curricula.
It also includes learning objectives and links to wider resources (for example the Work and Health elearning modules for healthcare professionals for both teachers and students. Medical schools can adapt the materials to meet their own needs.
The materials consist of 16 PowerPoint slide-sets (with notes included) and lecturer notes divided into three learning frameworks:
We welcome your feedback on the use and improvement of this resource. Once you have accessed a session in the programme a session feedback icon will become available, allowing you to score the session and provide feedback on your experience and usefulness of the content.
The evidence gathered for the slide content was identified in collaboration by experts in the field.
